The Box Education Centre

The Box works in partnership with St. John's Church of England School, Epping to provide a structured programme of alternative education for a small group of Year 10 & 11 students referred by the school. Click here for a summary of the programme for 2006-08.

When does Alternative Education take place?

Students on the Alternative Education Programme follow a two day a week course which takes place on Mondays and Fridays alongside an extended Work Experience placement for the other three days.

Who takes part in Alternative Education?

The aim of the programme is to provide learning in a more informal setting for students who find it hard to learn in the structured environment of school and to allow these students to achieve in a range of appropriate accredited courses. Students are referred to The Box directly from St John’s School. We currently teach 9 students in two groups.

What do the students gain?

All students follow the ASDAN Programme, working towards their Bronze and Silver Awards and AQA Entry Level Certificates in PSHE, Maths and English. These provide a stepping stone to GCSE and NVQ level qualifications and are recognised by colleges and employers.

What else do they learn?

Alongside these accredited elements, students will also have the opportunity to practise basic numeracy and literacy, learn life skills, develop opinions, explore spirituality, experiment with creativity and widen their general knowledge ready for life in the workplace.

Who delivers the programme of learning?

An education team of three qualified secondary school teachers, all with experience of mainstream teaching and youth and community work, deliver the programme.

Who funds this side of the work of The Box?

At present, we receive no specific funding for this work but rely on donations.
