does Alternative Education take place?
Students on the Alternative Education Programme follow a two day a week course which takes place on Mondays and Fridays alongside an extended Work Experience placement for the other three days. Who
takes part in Alternative Education? The
aim of the programme is to provide learning in a more informal setting for
students who find it hard to learn in the structured environment of school and
to allow these students to achieve in a range of appropriate accredited courses.
Students are referred to The Box directly from St John’s
What
do the students gain? All
students follow the ASDAN Programme, working towards their Bronze and Silver Awards and AQA
Entry Level Certificates in PSHE, Maths and English. These provide a stepping
stone to GCSE and NVQ level qualifications and are recognised by colleges and employers. What
else do they learn? Alongside
these accredited elements, students will also have the opportunity to practise basic
numeracy and literacy, learn life skills, develop opinions, explore spirituality,
experiment with creativity and widen their general knowledge ready for life in the workplace. Who
delivers the programme of learning? An
education team of three qualified secondary school
teachers, all with experience of mainstream teaching and youth and community
work, deliver the
programme. Who
funds this side of the work of The Box? At
